What Controlling Is and Why It Exists

Controlling vs. Financial Accounting

SAP CO (Controlling) is the module for management accounting — the internal view of how money moves inside the company. FI (Financial Accounting) produces external, legally required statements. CO answers which department, project, or product drove performance and whether it was efficient.

Every CO activity lives inside a controlling area, which can span one or several company codes sharing the same chart of accounts and fiscal year variant. The link between FI and CO is the cost element. In S/4HANA, cost elements are unified with the G/L account master.

CO objects you will meet: cost centers (where costs are incurred), internal orders (temporary collectors for projects), profit centers (areas of responsibility), CO-PA (profitability analysis), and Product Cost Controlling.
