SAP S/4HANA is SAP's flagship ERP system. The name breaks down like this: S/4 = Business Suite 4, HANA = High-Performance Analytic Appliance — SAP's in-memory database. Together they represent the biggest rethink of SAP in 25 years.

If your company runs an older SAP system, it's almost certainly SAP ECC (ERP Central Component). S/4HANA is what ECC grows up to become.

Why the change mattered

ECC was built in the 1990s when disk storage was expensive and processors were slow. It worked around those constraints by using aggregation tables — pre-calculated summaries stored separately so reports could run fast without touching millions of raw records.

HANA made those workarounds obsolete. When your entire database lives in RAM and queries run in seconds, you don't need pre-aggregated tables. SAP used that opportunity to simplify the data model dramatically.

The single biggest example: the Universal Journal. In ECC, a single financial posting wrote to dozens of tables simultaneously — FI tables, CO tables, profit centre tables, and more. In S/4HANA, a posting writes to one table: ACDOCA. That's it.

What changed for users

Most end-users notice two things:

The interface. S/4HANA ships with SAP Fiori — a clean, tile-based UI that runs in a web browser. No more installing the SAP GUI on every laptop (though the SAP GUI still exists for some transactions and many companies use it alongside Fiori).

Speed. Reports that took 30 minutes in ECC often run in seconds in S/4HANA. Material Ledger, margin analysis, and real-time MRP are now viable without overnight batch jobs.

Deployment options

Your company can run S/4HANA in three ways:

• On-premise — SAP software installed on your own servers. You control everything, including when you upgrade.
• Private Cloud (RISE with SAP) — SAP hosts a dedicated instance for your company. You get more control than Public Cloud but less infrastructure headache than on-premise.
• Public Cloud (SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition) — Multi-tenant SaaS. Faster to implement, quarterly automatic upgrades, but limited customisation.

Releases and versions

SAP releases a new S/4HANA version every year: 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. Unlike ECC which received patches, each S/4HANA release is a complete new version. Most content in this platform targets 2022 through 2024 — the versions most commonly in production today.
