What SuccessFactors Actually Is
SAP SuccessFactors is SAP's cloud-based suite for HR — what the industry calls HCM, or Human Capital Management. In plain English: it's the software a company uses to handle everything about its people. Who works here, what they get paid, how they're hired, how they're trained, how their performance is reviewed, and who's lined up to take the big jobs next.
Here's the origin story. SuccessFactors started life as an independent cloud company. SAP bought it in 2012 for about $3.4 billion ([MarketScreener](https://www.marketscreener.com/quote/stock/SUCCESSFACTORS-INC-66775/news/SuccessFactors-Inc-SAP-Completes-Acquisition-of-SuccessFactors-Inc-14040018/)), and it became SAP's answer to running HR in the cloud rather than on servers sitting in a company's own basement.
That last point is the heart of it. For decades, SAP's HR software was SAP HCM (also called SAP HR or HCM on-premise) — powerful, but installed and maintained on a company's own hardware. Every update was a project. Every new country's payroll rules meant more custom work.
Cloud HR flips that model. With SuccessFactors:
- SAP hosts and runs the software. You access it through a browser or mobile app.
- Updates land automatically — SAP ships two major releases a year (the "1H" and "2H" releases). The 1H 2025 release alone packed more than 250 updates ([Zalaris](https://zalaris.com/resources/resource-library/discover-what-s-new-highlights-of-the-sap-successfactors-1h-2025-release-for-hcm)).
- Compliance for different countries comes built in — Employee Central supports over 100 locales out of the box ([SAP](https://www.sap.com/products/hcm/employee-central-hris.html)).
Who uses it? Mostly mid-size to very large organizations — global companies that need consistent HR processes across many countries, all in one system. If you've ever clocked your hours, requested vacation, or done a performance review in a slick web app at a big employer, there's a decent chance it was SuccessFactors behind the curtain.
