What it actually means
SAP cannot determine a valid item category for the item you are adding to the sales document.
Why it happens
- The combination of sales document type + item category group (from the material master) has no entry in item category determination.
- The material master item category group is blank or wrong.
- You are adding a free-of-charge, text, or service item whose determination was never configured.
- A higher-level item is driving a sub-item category that is not allowed.
How to fix it
- 1Check item category determination in VOV4 for your sales document type + item category group (+ usage + higher-level item).
- 2Check the item category group on the material master Sales: Sales Org 2 view.
- 3Add the missing determination entry, or correct the material master so it resolves to an allowed category.
Stopping it happening again
Whenever a new material type or sales document type is introduced, walk through item category determination as part of the design.
