SAP FAGLB03G/L Account Balance Display (New G/L)

FAGLB03 answers "what did this account do this year?" as a twelve-row table: one line per period, showing debits, credits, the period movement and the cumulative balance.

It is the natural first stop for an investigation. Rather than opening a line item report with a hundred thousand rows, find the period that looks wrong here, then drill in.

It is the new G/L counterpart of the older FS10N, and like FAGLL03 it understands ledgers, profit centres and segments.

The fields, in plain English

Fiscal year

Which year to display. All periods of that year are shown, so this choice frames the whole report.

Watch out: On a non-calendar fiscal year, period 1 is not January. Check the variant before reading anything into the month numbers.

Balance carried forward

The opening balance brought from the prior year. On a P&L account this should be zero — P&L accounts are closed to retained earnings at year end.

Watch out: A non-zero carry-forward on a P&L account signals the year-end close did not run correctly. That is a real finding, not a display quirk.

Cumulative balance

The running total at each period end — the figure that should agree with the balance sheet or P&L for that month.

Ledger / Profit center / Segment

Restrict the balance to one set of books or one reporting dimension. Leave blank for the whole company code in the leading ledger.

Step by step

  1. 1Enter the G/L account, company code and fiscal year.
  2. 2Add a ledger, profit centre or segment if you want a narrower view.
  3. 3Execute. Read down the cumulative column for the shape of the year.
  4. 4Find the period that looks wrong.
  5. 5Double-click that period's debit or credit figure to drop into the line items.
  6. 6Double-click a line item to open the document in FB03.

Errors you will hit, and what they mean

No values exist for the selection

Why: Nothing posted to that account in that year, or the ledger/profit centre filter excluded everything.

Fix: Clear the optional filters and try the adjacent fiscal year.

Balance carried forward is zero but there were prior-year postings

Why: The balance carry-forward program has not been run for the new year.

Fix: A period-end task for the close team. Never post a manual entry to compensate for it.

Balance does not agree with the financial statements

Why: Different ledger, or the statement is built on a financial statement version that maps this account elsewhere.

Fix: Confirm the ledger first, then check the account's position in the FSV using S_ALR_87012284.

Common questions

What is the difference between FAGLB03 and FS10N?

FS10N is the classic balance display; FAGLB03 is the new G/L version that understands ledgers and splitting dimensions. Same idea, newer foundation.

Why is my P&L account carrying a balance forward?

It should not. P&L accounts are cleared to retained earnings at year end, so a carry-forward balance means the close ran incorrectly or the account is misclassified in FS03.

Can I see several years at once?

Not directly — the report is per fiscal year. Run it twice and compare, or use a financial statement report for a multi-year view.
