SAP SE12 — ABAP Dictionary: Display
SE12 is SE11 with the editing removed. Same screens, same navigation, same information — it simply cannot modify a Dictionary object.
That makes it the right transaction to hold if your work involves understanding data structures rather than changing them: functional consultants, analysts, anyone writing queries or specifications.
It is also the sensible authorisation to request on a production system. "I need to see how tables are structured" is an easy conversation; "I need SE11" sounds like asking to change the database.
When you would actually use SE12
- Reading table structures on a production system where you should not have change access.
- Looking up field types and key fields while writing a specification.
- Any Dictionary lookup where you want no possibility of altering something.
What the screen looks like
The fields, in plain English
Same field as SE11. MARA is the material master general data, MARC the plant-specific view, MAKT the descriptions.
Identical to SE11 — fields, keys, data elements, domains, where-used. Consult the SE11 guide for the detail; the only difference here is that nothing can be edited.

Why: Some organisations grant SE11 in display mode instead and never assign SE12.
Fix: Ask which of the two you have. They show the same information.
Common questions
Should I ask for SE11 or SE12?
SE12 if you only need to read, which is true for most functional work. It is an easier authorisation to justify and removes the risk of changing something.
Does SE12 show less than SE11?
No. The information is identical — only the ability to edit is missing.
